Indigenous Mentorship in the Health Sciences
Welcome to Indigenous Mentorship Learning
Mentorship is more than providing advice, direction, or academic support. It is a relationship built over time through trust, respect, accountability, and care. This learning space is designed for mentors who want to strengthen their ability to support Indigenous mentees in ways that are culturally responsive, strengths-based, and grounded in respect for Indigenous identities, communities, and knowledge systems. Through this website, mentors are invited to reflect on their role, deepen their understanding, and develop practical approaches for building more meaningful mentoring relationships.
A Module-Based Learning Journey
This website offers a module-based learning experience that mentors can move through at their own pace. Each module focuses on a key aspect of mentoring Indigenous mentees, combining reflection, practical guidance, and opportunities to think critically about mentorship practices. The modules are designed to support mentors at different stages of their learning journey, whether they are new to Indigenous mentorship or seeking to strengthen existing relationships. Together, the modules provide a pathway for mentors to build knowledge, confidence, and responsibility in their mentoring role.
Supporting Indigenous Mentees with Respect
Indigenous mentees bring diverse strengths, experiences, responsibilities, and aspirations into mentoring relationships. Effective mentorship requires recognizing these strengths while also understanding that Indigenous learners and professionals may be navigating academic, research, health, or workplace environments shaped by colonial histories and ongoing inequities. Mentors have an important role in creating spaces where Indigenous mentees feel respected, supported, and able to show up as their whole selves. This means listening carefully, avoiding assumptions, honouring lived experience, and supporting mentees in defining success in ways that are meaningful to them.
